The Consortium for Exceptional Children (CEC), Special Education
Department, is a collaboration between three districts in Lapeer County:

Almont, Dryden, and Imlay City Community Schools

Regardless of the nature or severity of a child's disability, CEC and local district special education staff are dedicated to addressing a wide range of needs. The Consortium currently services over 500 students with a variety of social, emotional and learning impairments. Children are included into traditional classrooms as much as possible.

Special education services may include ancillary support services, classroom supports, and/or direct instruction. The appropriate services may be provided either in the student's home building, in a program in another CEC district, or through attendance at a county center program. Recommended programming is based on individualized consideration for every student's unique needs.

If you are concerned about your child's progress in school, you should first speak to your child's teacher. If you are not able to resolve your concerns with the teacher, ask the principal if concerns can be addressed by the school's intervention team. This is a group of staff members who brainstorm different intervention techniques to assist a child who is struggling either academically or behaviorally. If the child has not responded adequately to evidence-based interventions, then a referral to special education may be appropriate.
